Your thisness in the Thisness

November 8, 1308, Blessed John Duns Scotus (b. 1266) left this plane of existence. Scotus is perhaps the most influential Franciscan theologian, outside of St. Bonaventure. His theology was overshadowed by the scholasticism of Thomas Aquinas. Like Aquinas, Scotus was mystical. Unlike Aquinas, Scotus rendered theology in highly affective, creation-centered terms – following the founder of his order, St. Francis of Assisi.

Scotus evidenced deep reverence for the Mystery of the Incarnation of the Word in Jesus of Nazareth and devotion to his mother, St. Mary. Central to his thought was mystical affections, or mystical Love.

In a vision Christmas night 1299, Scotus was immersed in mystical contemplation of the Incarnation of the Word. Being rapt in ecstasy, St. Mary appeared. She placed in his arms the child Jesus. The child Jesus kissed Scotus and embraced him in Love.

Scotus, unlike many other theologians, did not see the crucifixion as payment for sins or a satisfaction to the Abba-Amma (Father, Mother) due for sins. Scotus held the Incarnation was willed as expression of the Love of the One and from desire of Universal Spirit to manifest a consummation of oneness with all Nature.

Yes, Scotus would say, “The cross was the result of our sin.” Yet, he would say, also – and I use his words: “I am of the opinion that God wished to redeem us in this fashion principally in order to draw us to his love.” We, then, through the Cross, become “co-lovers” of the Blessed Trinity. We, the Mystical Body of the Son, love the Father-Mother in and through the Son, by the empowering wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

* * *

Therefore, the Word is immersed in creation to redeem (or, liberate) creation – to bring it into the fullness of its own destiny to mirror the wholeness of G-D. Each created thing – or each aspect of matter – is in conformity to an ideal pattern by the individuality and uniqueness of its haecceitas: “thisness,” taught Scotus. A rock has a thisness, a cloud has a thisness, a dust particle has a thisness, you and I have a thisness – heavenly beings have a thisness.

Love, then, is the expression of each unique thisness in the whole Thisness, which is the Source of each thisness. Each thing in the order of matter is destined to return to the Thisness that gives it the being that underlies its unique word – or being-expression - in and through the Word.

* * *

We do not escape the thisness of the natural order by being in and of G-D. We remain fully a part of matter, of Nature. We are Nature. We could say that in some way, in being itself among all other things, each aspect of Nature loves the Source of its life and being. Then, in a mystical sense, all creation is becoming the Body of Christ, and creation in fulfillment is to be the New Jerusalem - which is a cosmic summation in Love and mutual interbeing in Being, not a place.

Thus, the materiality of the Incarnation – enfleshing – of the Word is the Divine affirmation of the holiness and goodness of every thisness. This includes our love of Jesus. Scotus wrote: “In paying homage to Christ I would rather go too far than not far enough to give him the praise that is due him.”

* * *

The view of Scotus can be applied to varied faiths. Indeed “Christ” is more than Jesus of Nazareth, as Buddha is more than Siddhartha. The Jesus-Life is one Life with all Teachers, and with you and me as Nature in expressions of thisness. We honor this Cosmic Expression, this Word of Life, by honoring our thisness in the Thisness many call G-D.

Our True Self is not a self apart from human existence. Being Itself is expressing through our human uniqueness, thisness. Our flesh and mind is the Incarnation of G-D. When we see our True Self, we see Thisness, and we can better honor the thisness manifested in and through other persons and life forms, and traditions of faith and spirituality.
